MAURITIUS TRAVEL GUIDE

A Dreamy Escape: My March Holiday in Mauritius

This past March, my husband and I had the pleasure of spending a week in the stunning island paradise of Mauritius—and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. From the moment we landed, I was welcomed by warmth, calm, and incredible hospitality. Whether you’re looking for a serene beach escape, delicious cuisine, or a touch of culture, Mauritius ticks every box. Here’s a day-by-day recap of my unforgettable stay.

Day 1 – Arrival & Island Welcome (Thursday)

We arrived in Mauritius on Thursday afternoon after a smooth flight with Turkish Airlines—my first time flying with them, and I was genuinely impressed. Their customer service and cabin crew were phenomenal. I felt comfortable and well looked after throughout the journey.

Upon arriving at the Westin Resort, we were welcomed with refreshing drinks by the friendly staff. The atmosphere was peaceful and serene, and everyone we met made us feel right at home. After a brief tour and an introduction to the resort’s amenities, restaurants, and activities, we settled in.

Our Room – Relaxation Mode Activated

The room honestly felt like a mini spa retreat. The first thing I noticed was the gorgeous standalone bathtub right by the window—it gave such a luxurious feel, especially with the sheer curtains softly filtering the light. I could just imagine having a slow soak with a glass of wine and some music on. On either side, there were two walk-in showers with pretty frosted glass designs, which felt both modern and private.

The bed was super comfy—big, plush, and perfect after a long day out in the sun. I loved the little window cut-out behind the bed that looked into the bathroom area; it made the whole space feel open but still cosy. We had robes hanging up, a roomy wardrobe area, and just enough thoughtful touches to make it feel like home but better.

Everything about the room said relax, take your time, and enjoy—which is exactly what I did!

Dinner that evening was at one of the resort’s main restaurants, followed by drinks at the bar, where we enjoyed live music under the stars—an idyllic start to our holiday.

                Day 2 – Beachside Bliss & Pan-Asian Dining (Friday)

Friday was all about relaxation. We spent the morning lounging at the beach and had a casual, delicious lunch at the Beach Grill, just steps away from the water.

That evening, we dined at Mystique, the resort’s pan-Asian fine dining restaurant. There was supposed to be a live fire show, but unfortunately, it was cut short due to stormy weather. Still, the evening turned out to be memorable.

There was a small issue with my meal—my chicken wasn’t cooked all the way—but the way it was handled was nothing short of exceptional. The head chef personally addressed the situation and invited us back for a complimentary dinner on Sunday night. I really appreciated their professionalism and dedication to making things right.

Day 3 – Leisure, Local Exploring & Live Music (Saturday)

On Saturday, we went for a casual drive around the local area, soaking in more of the island’s natural beauty and charm. Later, we returned to the resort for early drinks and explored the spa and gym area, both of which were beautifully maintained and tranquil.

In the evening, we had dinner followed by drinks and live music at the bar—a lovely routine we quickly fell in love with.

Day 4 – Botanical Gardens & Chef’s Table Experience (Sunday)

After a leisurely breakfast, we visited the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens—one of the most iconic sites in Mauritius. While I’m not a plant expert, I truly enjoyed wandering among the lush greenery, unique tropical species, and the famous giant lily pond.

We also saw deer, tortoises, and learned that Mauritius’ first Prime Minister is cremated and buried within the garden grounds.

Later that evening, we returned to Mystique for our complimentary dinner prepared by the head chef. The meal was exquisite: a surf and turf mixed grill for the main course, followed by a caramelised banana dessert with chocolate sauce. As always, the night ended with live music and cocktailLater that evening, we returned to Mystique for our complimentary dinner from the head chef.         Day 5 – Glass-Bottom Boat, Port Louis & Southern Coastal Drive (Monday)

Monday was a day of variety and discovery. We began with a morning glass-bottom boat trip, which provided a glimpse of the vibrant marine life and coral reefs beneath the surface.

In the afternoon, we visited the Port Louis Shopping Centre to explore the local mall and grab some lunch. After that, we took a beautiful drive along the southern perimeter of the island, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. From dramatic coastline views to small, quiet villages, it was a great way to see more of Mauritius off the beaten path.

That evening, we were invited for complimentary drinks with the Head of Operations at the resort, who genuinely wanted to hear about our experience. It was refreshing to see how much they care about guest feedback and the resort’s overall service standards.

Day 6 – Mauritius Independence Day Celebration (Tuesday)

Our last full day on the island coincided with Mauritius Independence Day, and the resort went all out to celebrate.

Festivities began in the late morning, with a commemorative gathering and procession honouring the country’s independence. It was followed by a traditional dance performance by local youth, complete with live music and vibrant cultural displays. The resort was adorned with Mauritian flags, and the festive spirit was infectious.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed rum tasting and a hand massage with local scrub products from the spa team—such thoughtful additions that made the day even more special.

That night, we attended a Mauritian-themed dinner, with an incredible spread of authentic dishes and flavours. It was a perfect final celebration—rich in culture, community, and flavour.

                Day 7 – Farewell Drive & Duty-Free Shopping (Wednesday)

On our final morning, we took a scenic drive around the northern part of the island, soaking in our last views of Mauritius before heading to the airport.

We browsed duty-free shops for gifts and souvenirs for family and friends, then began our journey home— it was such an amazing trip, I will never forget it and feel so grateful for this trip.
